Gamers can step into the oversized shoes of one of Nickelodeon’s most beloved heroes in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, coming to a variety of consoles in 2023. Designed by Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated developer Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic, the game is considered a spiritual successor to Rehydrated, but will feature an all-new story starring SpongeBob and his friends. It will be released for eighth generation consoles as well as PC.
The Cosmic Shake involves SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick becoming involved with a wacky wish that affects all of Bikini Bottom and transforms Patrick into a balloon. SpongeBob and Balloon Patrick will be able to travel to and explore a variety of different realms called “Wishworlds,” which will feature themes such as prehistory and the Wild West. The game will be a 3D platformer with SpongeBob as the sole player character. This decision was made out of a desire to simplify the game following Rehydrated, which had SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy as playable characters. SpongeBob will have multiple special abilities and be able to move around the map in a variety of ways, including gliding.

While only SpongeBob will be playable, the game will include a number of other popular characters from the beloved TV show, including Sandy Cheeks and Squidward Tentacles. The characters will be voiced by their original voice actors from the Nickelodeon TV series. The game will also feature multiple unlockable costumes for SpongeBob, including costumes based on popular Internet memes such as “Mocking SpongeBob” from the episode “Little Yellow Book,” in which the character is perceived to be making a mocking expression but is in fact clucking like a chicken.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake will release in 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. An official release date has not yet been revealed.
