Treyarch Go Behind-The-Scenes For The Firebase Z Zombies Map

Treyarch has launched an exclusive behind-the-scenes trailer for the new zombie map Firebase Z, the second update to Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The trailer has arrived just in time for the February 4 launch day. A few days earlier, Treyarch dropped an official trailer, which promised hordes of the undead and the chance to portal hop between two locations in Vietnam, the firebase, and the village.

According to the lead writer at Treyarch, Craig Houston, the Firebase Z map “really lets us explore the character of Samantha Maxis to an extent we never, ever have before.”

Houston later described the initial task of producing the Dark Aether story as “daunting”, while adding that it was “reinvigorating for the team”.

Speaking about gameplay, the lead level designer, Anthony Saunders cited that the style of play “in Die Maschine might not necessarily translate over to Firebase Z.”

The developers further discussed the concept behind the “Mimic”, a tentacle creature with the ability to disguise itself as valuable items on the map, before transforming when unsuspecting players approach. This seems to be the same sort of concept as the Mimics in Dark Souls. The creature has been described by Treyarch’s lead game designer, Mark Maestas, as an “ambush style enemy”.

Moving onto weapons, Mark Maestas talked about the RAI K-84, based on a Russian prototype wonder weapon, made up of parts from an AK-74 and “experimental technology”.

Firebase Z picks up the Dark Aether story, established during Die Maschine (reimagined from 2008’s World At War), which launched last November with Black Ops Cold War

Meanwhile, in Warzone, Youtuber Vikkstar, a prolific Warzone content creator, quit the game after encountering a hacker live-streaming onto Facebook Gaming.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is out now and is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
