Winter’s On the Cards in New Deck Builder Wildfrost

Revealed today during the May 11 Nintendo Indie World livestream, Wildfrost is a unique story-driven roguelike deck builder starring a group of heroes their allies fighting to save the world from an endless frost. Featuring an adorable art style and classic deck building mechanics, Wildfrost comes from Deadpan Games, which previously released the roguelike platformer Caveblazers, in collaboration with Stardew Valley publisher Chucklefish.

Presumably inspired by such classic titles as Hearthstone and Slay the Spire, Wildfrost challenges players to trek through a world turned to snowy wilderness, collecting allies, skills and weapons in the form of cards to add to their deck. The player’s ultimate goal is to reach the Sun Temple, a mysterious location where it is rumored a true hero can put an end to the devouring Wildfrost for good.

In addition to the game’s engaging story, Wildfrost will feature daily challenges and the ability for players to develop and expand their home “hub town” of Snowdwell. With over one hundred different cards to collect, plus various charms that can be used to enhance their stats and abilities, players will truly be able to create their own unique deck to reflect their play  style. Some of the cards revealed during the first trailer for Wildfrost include Woodhead, who can take a hit for one of its allies, Bombom, a bomb-slinging warrior, and mysterious Masks that can be used to summon Ally cards such as the rabbit-like Junjun.

Wildfrost, which is currently scheduled to debut during the 2022 holiday season, was just one of several games announced during the nearly half hour long Indie World livestream event. Other titles coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2022 and 2023 include Devolver Digital’s noir-punk adventure Gunbrella, the dark exploration title Silt, and the highly anticipated Switch port of farming and creature raising simulator Ooblets.
