New Sony Patent for NFT, “Super-fungible Token” for Gaming

Thanks to a recently revealed patent, we know that Sony appears to be working on “Super-fungible tokens” which will be based around NFTs. These types of tokens were introduced a few years ago and have since been widely criticized for their extreme energy cost and their involvement in several scams and other controversies.

This recent foray into “Super-fungible tokens” NFTs is just one of the many recent streams of patents the company has been making. These “Super-fungible tokens” seem to allow players to exchange the tokens, which appear to be various gaming assets that can be applied to multiple types of games. From what was mentioned in the patents, there seems to be references to athletic, sports, and fighting games, which would suggest that franchises such as Madden NFL or Street Fighter could utilize these types of tokens in the future.

As for how these tokens will work, according to the patent document, the token will utilize meta data from the different gaming assets such as skins, weapons, abilities and in-game items and allow players to assign a token to these items that can then be shared and exchanged with other players. Based on the patent, these assets can only be assigned to one NFT token at a time. The intention of these tokens seems to be for all players to take an asset from one game and use it in another.

Currently, while this patent shows an alternative way for players to exchange items with each other, it is currently unknown how the utilization of NFTs and other Blockchain technology will be received by players as the general reception has been less than positive. However, we will have to wait and see if anything comes to fruition from this patent – many patents, especially in the gaming industry, are never realized.
