We just had the anticipated full dedicated Direct for Donkey Kong Bananza, and all we can say is wow. Nintendo had been tight-lipped with Donkey Kong’s first game back into an original 3D adventure in over two decades, only giving us one trailer when the Switch 2 was first revealed. We’re a month out from launch and they’ve now put all their cards out and revealed perhaps the biggest surprise of all – Donkey Kong Bananza is a Pauline and Donkey Kong origin story.
Donkey Kong finds Pauline as a child trapped in stone, as the two venture together towards the core of the planet to make a wish and see it come true. Pauline has dreams of being a singer, and uses her vocal powers to aid Donkey Kong on the journey which, as the Direct has shown, seems to be an expansive one. Nintendo are going all the way with Donkey Kong Bananza, with character customization, skill tree abilities, co-op options, tons of collectibles, loads of platforming abilities, new amiibo and more. It needs to be seen to be believed, so be sure to check out the full Direct on their YouTube channel if you missed it.
Along with the Pauline reveal, Nintendo also confirmed the long-awaited return of Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong. They didn’t get any fanfare in the Direct, appearing as secrets in the background of several scenes, but Nintendo has since given them dedicated social media posts to confirm their return too. We didn’t know what to expect from Donkey Kong Bananza, but after that Direct, we can’t wait to quite literally dive into it.
