When all your other tools and weapons have failed you, you’ll still have a knife – or, at least, this was the case in Resident Evil games prior to 2019’s remake of Resident Evil 2. Players were surprised to find that the formerly reliable knife was now rather easily breakable, meaning that they could find themselves stranded without a single method of fighting the monsters which populate the survival-horror setting.
Fortunately, the same will not be the case in the upcoming remake of Resident Evil 3, which will be released later this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The knife will be indestructible, able to attack even the toughest of monsters without breaking.
In an interview with GameInformer, remake producer Peter Fabiano explained the reasoning behind this decision. “We’re dealing with survival horror and everything is exhaustible…So if you did run out of everything, what would you have? The knife. The director wanted to make it so that you at least have your trusty knife.”
Fans of the Resident Evil series have been praising the decision for more reasons than simply the knife’s utility. In previous installments in the franchise, streamers, Let’s Players, enthusiasts and many other players prided themselves on completing “knife only” runs.
“Knife only” runs were play-throughs of the game in which no other weapon was allowed to be used. Everything from the lowliest common enemy to the toughest boss had to be taken down using only the knife. These runs were typically highly stealth-focused and extremely challenging. However, “knife only” runs were nearly impossible in the Resident Evil 2 remake due to the fragility of the weapon.
Will “knife only” runs of the upcoming Resident Evil 3 once again populate YouTube and Twitch? It seems likely – rumors claim that even a few members of the remake’s development team have already accomplished their own knife-centric play-throughs.
In these challenging times of global crisis, it’s a relief to hear that once again, no matter how bad things get, you will be able to face the terrifying world of Resident Evil 3 with your reliable knife at your side.
