Rian Johnson Directs Pokémon GO Fest Commercial Trailer

A new commercial for Pokémon GO Fest: Look Closer, has been released on Youtube. Better still, the ad has been directed by Rian Johnson, the acclaimed director behind Breaking Bad, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and most recently, murder-mystery thriller Knives Out.

Pokémon GO Fest is set to launch at the end of the month, across July 25-26. At this stage, the first-of-it’ s-kind virtual event has sold more than 700,000 tickets—these tickets span right around the globe, (110 countries and regions).

In a post from Niantic, the studio behind Pokémon GO, announced that they’d “teamed up with esteemed director Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Knives Out) to create a special new commercial that celebrates Pokémon GO Fest and honors the magic of Pokémon GO just in time for our fourth anniversary.”

 

Speaking to Niantic, Johnson said that “Pokémon GO has kept me engaged with my friends remotely as I’ve been practicing physical distancing these past few months.” 

The director described working with the studio as “a real pleasure,” hailing it “as a new experience for me to direct a production remotely, and I enjoyed the highly collaborative process and think we put together a fun and upbeat commercial that fans will enjoy.”

Johnson was responsible played a role in the conceptual development of the trailer “with his cinematic eye and vision of peeling back a layer of our everyday lives.”

Based in Los Angeles, Rian directed the cast and crew in New Zealand, as well as connecting with people from all around the world to bring together a “global production,” including New York, Seattle, San Francisco, London, and Tokyo.

The blog post summarises the trailer as “a fun and energizing video from start to finish that symbolizes the joyful experience of playing Pokémon GO wherever you are.”
