State Of Play: An Extended Look At Deathloop

The upcoming Deathloop got another trailer at today’s State of Play, giving us an extended look at Arkane Studios’ next big project.

With some James Bond-esque animated visuals (and even a song), this stylish new trailer is mostly cinematic, but does offer brief glimpses of the kind of gameplay we can expect in Deathloop.

The combat displayed looks fast-paced and brutal, as we see the player enter a room and make quick work of snapping an enemies neck, as well as bust into a room, drop some grenades, and exit through the window just as quickly.

It’s also reminiscent of Arkane Studios other work, especially the Dishonored series. You play in a first person perspective, and make your way around the map with stealth, or through open violence with a range of weaponry.

While not pushing the boat graphically, Deathloop seems confident stylistically, opting for lots of warm colors, detailed environments, and some impressive cinematography in the cutscenes, all adding to the cinematic tone of what we’ve seen from the game so far.

The trailer might not show off much of what we didn’t know already, but it offers us a deeper look at protagonists: Colt and Juliana. The story sees both characters stuck in a “time loop”, with Colt intent on ending it, and Juliana dedicated to preserving it. This pits them against each other, and as we see in this new trailer, aiming to take each other out. As previously announced, the main campaign will see you play as Colt, however, you can take control of Juliana and jump into another player’s game, stopping them from ending the time loop.

Deathloop is set to release May 21, 2021, with one-year exclusivity on PlayStation 5 and PC.
