Overwatch 2 Hits More Than 35 Million Players In First Month

The free-to-play Overwatch 2 has crossed 35 million players in just a month after its release. The news can be found in Activision Blizzard’s Q3 2022 sales report, listed as a business highlight on page two. The report notes that “many” Overwatch 2 players are new to the series. Players are also more engaged than ever, with more than double the average daily player numbers of the original Overwatch.

Overwatch 2 is taking the already popular Overwatch series to new levels of success. There was initially a rocky launch for the game, with the phone verification scandal prevented fans from playing the game and DDoS attacks that took down Blizzard’s servers. Despite these problems, it took just ten days for the game to get 25 million players, and its peak daily player count tripled the record set by its predecessor..

Ramattra Overwatch 2 surrounded by omnics
The latest hero, Ramattra, joins Overwatch 2 in Season 2’s battle pass.

Overwatch 2 will continue to be supported into the future, with a new tank hero Ramattra ready to launch with Season 2 in December. Ramattra will be locked behind the Battle Pass, part of Overwatch 2‘s controversial monetization system. Despite some fan complaints about the new progression and monetization methods, Activision Blizzard’s financial report says “player investment is also off to a strong start, positioning the title to be a meaningful contributor to Blizzard’s business in the fourth quarter.”

We were part of the outcry against Overwatch 2‘s monetization system. Our 5/10 review shares our love for the core Overwatch gameplay loop, but we were left severely disappointed by the use of microtransactions and the lack of earnable currency. Despite our impressions though, Overwatch 2 is a huge success for Blizzard and that is great news for fans of the game who want more in future.
