Sonic Becomes a VTuber as Part of 30th Anniversary

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, so there have been all manner of announcements and events to celebrate. While a concert, livestreams and a spectacular cake are pretty standard fare, a more unusual addition is the announcement of Sonic’s foray into being a VTuber.

It’s not clear how many videos Sonic’s stint in the world of VTuber life will entail, but the official Sonic Twitter account did share a brief clip, featuring original Japanese-language voice actor for Sonic Jun’ichi Kanemaru.

The message translates to:

Hey guys! I’m Sonic – Sonic the Hedgehog! When I was out running, I ended up in this place. Twitter, is it? It seems super lively and fun here! Thank you all for your congratulatory comments. I hope to be able to work with you for 30 or 100 years! See you!

You can watch the full livestream which contains more snippets of VTuber Sonic below. His appearances are at 7:15, 1:07:29, and 1:51:14.

Further Sonic-filled content headed our way this year includes Sonic Colours Ultimate, which releases on September 7, and some short-form animations, such as two-parter tie-in Sonic Colours Rise of the Wisps.

The blue blur will also be popping up in various other Sega titles this year as part of the anniversary, including a Sonic Pack containing items and costumes for Two Point Hospital on July 30, and Sonic The Fighters featuring as a mini-game in Lost Judgment which releases on September 24.
