Neil Druckmann has revealed that after the initial launch of The Last Of Us on the PS3, DLC featuring Ellie’s mother was almost in development at Naughty Dog. In an interview with Variety, Druckmann confirmed thoughts of a DLC, after an animated short idea “fell apart” – but the lost ideas will be explored in HBO’s adaptation. “I had written a short story after we had shipped the game already. It was supposed to be an animated short, but it fell apart and didn’t come to be. There was a moment where we almost made it a DLC,” Druckmann explained.
He further shared details of conversations with Craig Mazin, who “was immediately excited” by the prospect of a DLC. While it’s unlikely we’ll ever see an animated short from Naughty Dog chronicling the backstory of Ellie’s origins at this point, HBO’s The Last of Us will be picking up the idea for an episode later in the series. Not only will Ellie’s mom make an appearance, but she will be played by Ashley Johnson, the voice actress of Ellie in the video games. Druckmann added that, with Mazin, they developed the concept “in the most beautiful, poetic way, which is Ashley Johnson playing Ellie’s mom and she was the original actor for Ellie.”
