Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom: Tips & Tricks For Defeating King Gleeoks

There are many dangerous monsters roaming Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. These include returning favorites like Lynels and Hinoxes as well as new additions such as the mechanically powered Zonai Constructs and the Depths-dwelling Frox. One classic monster from earlier The Legend of Zelda titles also returns: the Gleeok. This three-headed dragon comes in four varieties: ice, lightning, fire, and the terrifying King Gleeok, which can wield all three elements in battle. Defeating King Gleeoks is necessary to earn several of Tears of the Kingdom’s most valuable rewards, so this guide will show you some tips and tricks to take down these dragons once and for all!

All King Gleeok Locations In Tears Of The Kingdom

Gleeok11

Like Lynels, Molduga, and other mini-boss enemies in Tears of the Kingdom, King Gleeoks are fairly rare. Rather than roaming around Hyrule, they limit themselves to specific locations, generally floating Sky Islands or Coliseums deep in the Depths. There are a total of four King Gleeoks in the game, and each provides a unique reward for defeating it. They can be found in the following places:

  • A circular Sky Island in the West Hebra Sky Archipelago, southwest of the Wind Temple
  • A circular Sky Island in Necluda, above Eventide Island
  • A circular Sky Island in the Gerudo Desert, just above the Lightning Temple
  • The Gleeok Den in the Depths beneath the Thyphlo Ruins

All four King Gleeoks can drop Gleeok Horns, Gleeok Guts, and Gleeok Wings when defeated. In addition, the three in the sky each guard a Sage’s Will – an item that can be used at a Goddess Statue to increase the power of your Sage companions. The King Gleeok in the Depths guards the Cap of Twilight, an armor piece inspired by Link’s outfit from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

But, to claim these rewards, you’ll first need to defeat the associated King Gleeoks. Here are some tips and tricks to help you do so:

Be Prepared For All Weather & Element Conditions

Gleeok3

Because the King Gleeoks in Hyrule’s skies are located in some of the kingdom’s most remote corners, you may have to deal with some extreme weather and temperatures while fighting them. The King Gleeok in Hebra’s island is always suffering from extreme cold, so you will need to wear the Snowquill Armor Set or eat cold-resistant Meals or Elixirs in order to face it without taking damage. Similarly, the King Gleeok in the desert is on an island that will be extremely cold at night or extremely hot during the day – if fighting it at daytime, wear the Desert Voe Set to keep yourself safe.

Gleeok4

In addition, the King Gleeoks themselves are able to produce both extreme heat (from their fire-breathing head) and extreme cold (from their ice-breathing head). Because of this, you should always bring along both cold- and heat-resistant gear when fighting a King Gleeok. The head that shoots lightning can shock you and make you drop your weapon; avoid this by wearing the Lightning Helm you can steal from the Yiga Clan hideout.

Finally, the King Gleeok in the Depths, like most monsters found in the darkness below Hyrule, is covered with Gloom and can use its Gloom status to break and destroy your hearts. Wear the Depths armor set (found by giving Poes to the Bargainer Statues scattered around Hyrule) or bring Meals made with Sundelions to keep yourself safe from the threat of Gloom.

Bring A Savage Lynel Bow

Gleeok5

There are a number of different Bows you can find throughout Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom, each with its own unique effects. Fights against King Gleeoks will naturally involve a lot of archery – the eyes on the three heads are their weak spots, and you will need to shoot each eye multiple times to knock out the monster and be able to engage at melee range. Therefore, it is very important to consider what bow you should bring with you to the fight.

By far, the best option is the Savage Lynel Bow, which can be dropped by defeated Lynels or occasionally found hidden in the Depths. This bow fires three arrows at once, allowing you to target the King Gleeok’s multiple heads with a single shot. You can further increase this to five arrows at once by finding a Rock Octorok and having it swallow and spit out your Savage Lynel Bow. (As the Rock Octorok can provide several different buffs to your Savage Lynel Bow, you may need to perform this trick multiple times before you get the x5 Shot bonus).

Fuse Eyeballs To Your Arrows

Gleeok13

Unfortunately, just firing your Savage Lynel Bow willy-nilly will not work – you’ll need to fuse a few Eyeballs to your arrows to give them homing properties. This is because the King Gleeok is an extremely mobile monster that will constantly be flying around, and you will have a lot of trouble hitting the eye weak points without the aid of some eyeballs.

The items that can give your arrows the ability to home in on their target are Aerocuda Eyeballs, Keese Eyeballs, and Octorok Eyeballs. Keese Eyeballs are generally the easiest to farm, as Keese live in Caves and often travel in large swarms. You will want to bring as many Eyeballs as possible to a King Gleeok fight, as, even with their homing ability, it will still take several shots to knock this fearsome creature to the ground.

Use Springs Or Recall To Take The Fight To The Skies

Gleeok12

King Gleeoks can fly quite high, and sometimes even Eyeball-assisted homing arrows might not be enough. Instead of staying on the ground, you can head into the sky to take down the King Gleeok on its own turf. There are two methods of doing this: using a Zonai Spring device or your Recall ability.

Zonai Springs can be obtained from Device Dispensers found throughout the Sky Islands. When hit with a weapon, they send Link flying into the air. The arenas where King Gleeoks are found generally do not contain Zonai Springs naturally, so you will need to bring your own. Because the King Gleeok can possibly knock the Spring off the Sky Island during the fight, you should make sure to bring multiple Springs as backup.

The other option is to wait until the King Gleeok begins dropping large ice projectiles on the battlefield. Jump on top of one of these projectiles – make sure to wear cold-resistant gear or eat a Meal to avoid freezing when you do. Then, use your Recall ability to send the projectile back in time. It will fly up into the sky and then explode, leaving you at a similar altitude to the King Gleeok. From there, you will be able to take much closer shots and send the creature crashing back down to earth as soon as possible.

Elemental Weaknesses Give You The Advantage

Gleeok8

The final tip for fighting a King Gleeok is to turn its mastery of the three elements against it. Each head can shoot powerful elemental beams, sure – but that also means they are weak to that element’s counterpart. This means that the fire head is weak to ice, the ice head is weak to fire, and the lightning head is weak to both water and light. While none of the heads are specifically weak to lightning, it can temporarily stun one of the heads, allowing you to focus on the other two.

There are a number of ways you can add these elements to your weapons and attacks. Here are just a few:

Gleeok6

  • Fire – Fuse Rubies, Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns, Gleeok Flame Horns, or Igneo Talus Hearts to melee weapons, fuse Fire Fruits or Red Chuchu Jelly to arrows, use a Zonai Flame Emitter, use Yunobo’s Sage of Fire ability to send him crashing into enemies
  • Ice – Fuse Sapphires, Ice-Breath Lizalfos Horns, Gleeok Frost Horns, or Frost Talus Hearts to melee weapons, fuse Ice Fruits or White Chuchu Jelly to arrows, use a Zonai Frost Emitter
  • Lightning – Fuse Topazes, Electric Lizalfos Horns, or Gleeok Thunder Horns to melee weapons, fuse Shock Fruit or Yellow Chuchu Jelly to arrows, use a Zonai Shock Emitter, use Riju’s Sage of Lightning ability to send a wide-range lightning shock out with an arrow
  • Water – Fuse Opals to melee weapons, fuse Splash Fruit to arrows, use Sidon’s Sage of Water ability to imbue your next attack with water
  • Light – Fuse Star Fragments or Light Dragon parts to melee weapons, fuse Dazzlefruit to arrows, use Zonai mirrors to reflect the sunlight (only available during daytime)

With the help of these handy tips and tricks, you can easily take out every King Gleeok enemy in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and claim the valuable treasure they guard.
