Famitsu: PS5 Console Sales Soar, While Fire Emblem Falls Below Pokemon

Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers Jan. 23 – Jan. 29, and Fire Emblem Engage has stumbled at the first hurdle. Falling from #1 last week to #4 with 28,000 sales, the game is underperforming compared to its predecessor Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Back in 2019, Three Houses took #2 in its second week and pushed almost 36,000 units.

Fire Emblem Engage did have to compete against two new entries, with Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life taking #1 with 40,000 sales, and Forspoken debuting at #3 with 29,000 sales. In Fire Emblem: Three Houses‘ second week, there were no other big releases competing for sales, which may explain part of Fire Emblem Engage‘s fall on the charts. We’ll have a better idea of its performance as the weeks go by.

One success story this week can be found on Famitsu’s hardware charts, where the PS5 sold almost 63,000 systems, a massive 170% increase over last year’s 23,000 sales in the same week. Greater supply of PlayStation 5 systems both in Japan and around the world is leading to a creep of sales steadily rising, as the console finally gets into the hands of its audience. A new financial report from Sony confirmed that the last quarter of the financial year was big for the PS5, with new audiences around the world investing in the system.
