The Proof of Guilt is a side quest in Octopath Traveler 2 that requires players to solve a mystery in the town of Timberain. In this quest, the defendant Nero is standing trial for the crime of stealing a valuable Azure Sun Sword. Meylan, the guard outside the courthouse, needs evidence in order to proceed with a successful prosecution of Nero. So, you need to gather the evidence to bring the thief to justice. The quest isn’t that challenging, and completing it rewards the player with valuable items.
In order to complete this quest, you must head into town and look for an NPC named Remorseful Old Man. He will be found in front of the tavern. Once found, interact with him, and he will give you the information about where can you find the Azure Sun Sword. You can get this information using Osvald’s Scrutinize, Castti’s Inquire, Hikari’s Bribe, or Temenos’ Coerce. After getting the information, you must visit the Timberrain Inn and look between the two Inns: there lies the hidden sword.
Upon locating the Azure Sun Sword, return to the Timberrain Court and interact with Maylan. Offer him the sword and he will present this evidence to the court. As a result of your efforts, Nero will be sentenced to 80 years imprisonment for his misdeeds. And the Proof of Guilt quest will be completed. You will be rewarded with 12,000 Leaves, a Critical Nut (L), and access to the “Proof of Justice” side quest.
